Understanding How Photovoltaic Cells Work
Photovoltaic cells work by converting sunlight into electricity. These cells contain semiconductors that capture photons, the light particles that make up sunlight.
When these photons strike a photovoltaic cell, they release electrons from the semiconductors. These electrons are responsible for generating direct current (DC). This current then passes through a solar inverter to be converted into alternating current (AC), which can power your electrical appliances.
A traditional photovoltaic cell consists of two layers of silicon:
-
The first layer (P-type) forms the base of the cell. It is positively charged with elements that have fewer electrons than silicon.
-
The second layer (N-type) acts as the conductive layer of the cell. It is negatively charged with elements richer in electrons than silicon.
When photons hit the silicon atom in the photovoltaic cell, they knock electrons free. These electrons leave a void and move toward the N-side of the cell, while the void moves toward the P-side. This dual movement generates direct current.
How Does TOPCon Technology Work?
What Type of Cell Do TOPCon Solar Panels Use?
TOPCon solar panel cells belong to the N-type cell category. This type of cell is much more efficient.
How Is a TOPCon Cell Made?
TOPCon solar cells are manufactured using a process similar to other photovoltaic cells, with a silicon base. A layer of silicon oxides is deposited on the substrate to reduce energy losses caused by electron recombination.
Then, a layer of doped polysilicon is placed on the oxide layer, allowing the movement of electrons and the voids they leave behind. Metallic contacts are added to the cell to collect and transfer the generated electrical current.
The TOPCon technology operates with a passivated emitter that minimizes charge carrier recombination. Unlike traditional photovoltaic cells with an opaque rear side, the back side of a TOPCon cell is transparent. This allows light to pass through this part of the cell as well, capturing more photons and improving efficiency.
What About Charge Carrier Recombination?
Electricity is generated by the photovoltaic effect, which involves the movement of electrons and the voids they leave behind. These elements are called charge carriers. However, if an electron and a void come into contact before reaching the P or N electrical contacts, their effect cancels out—this is known as recombination.
Recombination results in a loss of solar panel efficiency. However, with a TOPCon solar panel, the passivation layer added to the back of the cells acts as a barrier that prevents electrons and voids from meeting. This enhances the panel’s performance.
The Advantages of TOPCon Solar Panels
Optimal Solar Panel Performance
A TOPCon solar panel does not suffer from power loss due to exposure. Traditional solar panels may experience Light-Induced Degradation (LID), which temporarily reduces efficiency after prolonged exposure to intense sunlight.
This power loss can reach 10% within the first month of use. However, TOPCon panels, equipped with N-type photovoltaic cells, are immune to LID.
Additionally, these panels perform better in low-light conditions.
Higher Efficiency
The efficiency of a TOPCon photovoltaic panel is superior to other solar technologies. By minimizing recombination, photovoltaic cells capture more light and generate more electricity. Their efficiency can exceed 25% under optimal conditions.
Longer Lifespan
TOPCon panels also have a longer lifespan compared to other solar panels. They can last up to 50 years, maintaining more than 87% efficiency after 30 years of use.
Key Takeaways on TOPCon Solar Panels
TOPCon solar panels are among the best products on the market. Thanks to their advanced technology, their photovoltaic cells capture more light and do not suffer from efficiency loss like traditional panels. They reduce charge carrier recombination and eliminate the LID effect.
Additionally, they perform well in low-light conditions, making them ideal for areas with inconsistent sunlight. Their transparent back side allows them to absorb more photons, producing more green electricity.
With superior efficiency and an extended lifespan, TOPCon photovoltaic panels are an excellent investment. Their long-term profitability is assured, with a lifespan of up to 50 years.
With Planet Soar, choose high-quality solar panels to gain energy independence.
